RAINFOREST II

RAINFOREST II
fragments

«where does the idea of Earth come from?
where do we get the idea of water?
why do we have a word for it?
these things were conceived in the beginning,
before the dawning, these were ideas,
water and Earth, we can only have ideas
of things that have already been conceived
in Aluna.
before the dawning, before there was anything,
we were conceived in the water of Aluna.
so were the trees, the mountains, everything.»

rough material / additive and subtractive processes

ROUGH MATERIAL
SHAPES, TEXTURE

"That additive and subtractive topography-forming
processes are so commensurate is one of Earth’s
extraordinary attributes. The landscape of other rocky
planets and moons look alien precisely because these
worlds lack such a balance in the rates of creative and
destructive topographic agents.[…]

However, life itself can alter the processes that shape
topography: there is strong evidence that colonisation of
land by plants in early Silurian time slowed global erosion
rates and led to the emergence of rivers with well-defined
channels. (It has taken humans only a few centuries to
reverse that trend; by some estimates, modern erosion
ratesaccelerated by deforestation, agriculture, desertification,
and urbanisationare orders of magnitude higher than
geologic averages.)" MARCIA BJORNERUD / TIMEFULLNESS

the island / dream island & the birds

"Ham notes unusual birds that stop by for a short
visit as autumn approaches - sandpipers, an
invasion of coal-black starlings, a crow or two,
a large bird that might almost have been an eagle,
a small owl. It’s important to keep track of the
wind direction, temperature and sea level, plus
the restful cycle of the vegetation with respect
to birth and death, especially the irrational plants
that can disappear totally one summer only to
take complete possession of the beach meadow
the following year. And Ham writes a lot about
the rowan."

"Sometimes I felt like unrequited love - everything
exaggerated. I had the feeling that this immoderately
pampered and badly treated island was a living thing
that didn’t like us, or felt sorry for us, depending on
the way we behave, or just because."
